Why PSHE and Life Development?

Our PSHE based modules are divided into two categories: 21st Century Knowledge and 21st Century Skills.

Children need to have the skills to access and assess the information, as well as the information (i.e. knowledge) itself. It is important for pupils to know that they are building a series of skills that are transferable across all subjects and all areas of life.

Young people in the 21st century need to be:

  • Innovators
  • Lifelong learners
  • Responsible global citizens
  • Critical thinkers
  • Creative thinkers
  • Collaborative

So-called “soft skills”, such as: comprehensive listening, holding meaningful dialogues and having difficult conversations, can be learned, but are often not taught.

Our modules are divided into a range of important learning approaches, including:

CRITICAL THINKING

The objective analysis and evaluation of an issue, in order to form a judgement.

Employers want employees who can solve problems on their own using creative thinking and thoughtful analysis.

Critical thinkers are useful in every industry, from healthcare and engineering to education.

CREATIVE THINKING

Creative thinking means looking at something in a new way. It is the very definition of “thinking outside the box.” Often, creativity in this sense involves what is called lateral thinking, or the ability to perceive patterns that are not obvious.

Schools teach creative subjects, giving pupils the opportunity to be creative in their output, but don’t teach them directly the skills that will enable them to offer creative solutions to any problem at all.

SOCIAL SKILLS

Social skills are the skills we use to communicate and interact with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures, body language and our personal appearance.

COMMUNICATION

What is said is influenced by both verbal language and the way we use it – tone of voice, volume of speech and the words we choose – as well as by more subtle messages, such as: body language, gestures and other non-verbal communication methods.

COLLABORATION AND TEAMWORK

Although collaboration is often described as a “soft skill,” in today’s workplace it is just as vital as hard skills such as one’s educational background and/or technical knowledge. And, even though productive collaboration skills may not be innate to some individuals, they can easily be learned and practiced to perfection.

As schools increasingly focus on knowledge based curriculum subjects, rather than on skills, Vantage Education provides the skills necessary to access and assess new information, as opposed than the information itself
